Media Analysis: Kosovo’s PM Candidates in the Media: Who’s Talking About What?

As Kosovo approached its elections, the spotlight wasn’t solely on the candidates but also on the critical issues that resonated with voters. Analyzing the discussions from the final month before the elections reveals the dominant themes and the politicians most associated with each topic.

Methodology

Pikasa Analytics, a company specialized in digital media monitoring and social media analysis across more than 25 countries, including Kosovo, conducted this analysis to identify the main topics dominating media coverage during the election campaign. The research was carried out using the Analytics.Live platform, which tracks over 150 digital media outlets in Kosovo. From January 11 to February 7, more than 35,000 news articles were published covering the key candidates for the Prime Ministerial position. This comprehensive monitoring allowed us to pinpoint the issues that captured the public's attention and how frequently each candidate was associated with these topics.

Dominant Themes: Economic, Social, and Political Issues

Economic issues were at the forefront, with investment-related discussions dominating the landscape at 3,420 mentions. This reflects widespread concerns about economic growth and development, particularly in the context of high unemployment rates and the need for foreign investment to stimulate the economy. Bedri Hamza led the discourse, closely followed by Albin Kurti, both focusing on attracting foreign investments and bolstering local businesses. Salary increases were another critical economic issue, mentioned 1,531 times, highlighting the electorate's demand for improved living standards amid rising living costs. Pension reforms and increases combined for 1,308 mentions, reflecting the concerns of the aging population, with Ramush Haradinaj and Bedri Hamza being prominent advocates. Political issues were equally prominent, with the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue leading as the topic with the greatest impact, receiving 2,745 mentions. This highlights the centrality of foreign relations and national identity in the political discourse, with Albin Kurti spearheading the conversation, emphasizing its importance in shaping Kosovo's international standing. The prominence of this topic can be attributed to the ongoing tensions and the international community's pressure for a resolution, which has made it a pivotal election issue. NATO membership was another key political theme, with 1,637 mentions reflecting concerns over security and geopolitical alignment. Albin Kurti and Ramush Haradinaj were particularly vocal on this, underscoring their focus on enhancing Kosovo's security framework, a critical issue given the region's complex history and security challenges. The challenges surrounding North Kosovo garnered 1,236 mentions, addressed by multiple candidates, with Albin Kurti again leading, followed by Lumir Abdixhiku, underlining the region's strategic importance. Discussions on EU integration, with 1,049 mentions, underscored aspirations for economic development and political stability, with Albin Kurti and Bedri Hamza pushing for alignment with EU standards.
